Idea: settle query overlap

Two or more of your domains compete for the same search in Google.

When two of your own domains show up for the same search, they can take turns ranking and hold each other back. Deciding which one should own the search usually helps both.

What it suggests

Choose the domain that should rank for the search, then either make the other domain’s page clearly about something different or merge the content into the chosen one.

When it’s suggested

SaaSMaestro looks at each website’s top 100 Search Console searches for the selected period and finds the searches that two or more of your domains show up for. The six with the most impressions in total each become one workspace-wide action, listed after the websites on the action plan.

It needs both “Search Console data” and “Query overlap” switched on under Workspace basics → What to show.

What to do

  1. On Insights, open the search footprint to see where each domain ranks for the search and which one gets the clicks.
  2. Pick the owner, usually the domain that ranks best or that the search fits most closely.
  3. Rewrite the other page to target a different search, or merge it into the owner’s page and redirect it.
  4. Link from the other domain to the owner’s page where it helps visitors.

When it goes away

It goes away when only one of your domains still has the search in its top 100, or when it’s no longer among the six biggest overlaps. For one website’s pages competing with each other, see Tip: merge competing pages.

It drops off the action plan once it hasn’t been detected for 7 days. If you mark it done or dismiss it, it only comes back, as “Back again”, if it clears for at least 7 days and then returns.
