Timeline notes record what happened and when, such as a launch, a redesign or a campaign, so that when a chart jumps you know why. Notes appear on every chart, in reports and on client links.
Adding a note
- Right-click a day on any daily chart and choose “Add note…”.
- Click “+ Add a note” on a website’s page.
- Click “+ Add workspace-wide note” on the overview.
- Search for “Add a timeline note” with Ctrl+K.
Each note has a date, a title and optional details, and applies either to one website or to the whole workspace. Choose a type to give it an icon:
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| 🎉 Launch | New websites, sections, products or features. |
| 🔧 Site change | Redesigns, migrations, new tracking, SEO changes. |
| 📣 Campaign | Ads, newsletters, social pushes, PR. |
| 🐛 Issue | Outages, bugs, tracking problems, algorithm updates. |
Editing and deleting
Click a note’s marker on a chart, or the note in a list, and choose “Edit note…”. Save your changes or delete the note from there.
Measuring the effect
Each note shows “After:” with the change in visitors (or search clicks, for websites without GA4), comparing the daily average for up to 28 days after the note with the 28 days before. At least 14 days of data on each side are needed, so a new note shows its result two weeks later.
Automatic notes
Website health monitoring adds notes when it spots changes to a watched page or robots.txt. They’re marked “Detected automatically”. See Website health monitoring.
Who can add notes
Owners, admins and members. Viewers can see notes but not add or change them. To hide notes everywhere, switch off “Timeline notes” under Workspace basics → What to show; they’re kept and come back when you switch it on again.
