Searches ranking around the bottom of page one or on page two get few clicks, but they are already close. A small move up can bring many more clicks, usually faster than starting a new topic.
What it suggests
Strengthen the pages that rank for these searches and link to them from related pages, to push them onto the top half of page one.
When it’s suggested
It looks at the website’s top 100 searches in Search Console over the selected period.
It’s suggested when at least one of them has an average position between 8 and 20 and at least 50 impressions. The tip names the one with the most impressions and counts the rest, for example “12 queries just off page one”. It’s an Info tip.
What to do
- Start with the searches with the most impressions, and find the page that ranks for each in Search Console.
- Make sure that page answers the search fully: cover the questions people ask, update outdated parts and use the search’s wording in the title and headings.
- Add links to it from related pages on the website, using descriptive link text.
- Check the position again after a few weeks; Google can take a while to respond.
When it goes away
It goes away when none of the top searches sits between positions 8 and 20 with enough impressions.
It drops off the action plan once it hasn’t been detected for 7 days. If you mark it done or dismiss it, it only comes back, as “Back again”, if it clears for at least 7 days and then returns.
