Conversions up without more visitors

Conversions at least doubled while visitors barely changed, which often means double counting or a newly added key event.

Conversions at least doubled while visitor numbers barely changed. Real improvements are rarely that sudden, so it’s worth checking that every conversion is genuine and counted once.

What it means

When conversions jump without more visitors, the cause is usually measurement: a key event counted twice, a new event marked as a key event, or spam form submissions. Sometimes it’s real, for example after a strong offer or a fixed checkout.

What triggers it

SaaSMaestro compares GA4 key events and visitors for the current period with the period before, or with the same days last year if that’s your comparison setting. It’s raised when conversions rose by 100% or more from at least 10, while visitors changed by no more than 20% either way. It’s Medium severity.

While this issue is raised, the website doesn’t get the conversion rate idea, so a possible double count isn’t celebrated as a win. See Idea: share a conversion win.

Conversion checks only run while conversions are switched on under Workspace basics → What to show. Like the other checks on Google data, they’re paused while the Google connection is broken or stale, or while GA4 tracking looks broken.

Common causes

  • The GA4 tag or the conversion event is installed twice, for example by both a plugin and Google Tag Manager.
  • The thank-you page counts a conversion every time it’s reloaded or revisited.
  • A new or broader event, such as page views or clicks, was marked as a key event in GA4.
  • Spam or bot form submissions.

How to fix it

  1. Test the conversion with GA4 DebugView open and check the key event fires exactly once.
  2. In GA4 (Admin → Events), check which events are marked as key events and whether any were added recently.
  3. Look through recent form submissions or orders for spam, and add spam protection if needed.
  4. If the rise is real, add a timeline note saying what changed, so it can be repeated. See Timeline notes.

When it clears

SaaSMaestro re-checks every time it analyses the workspace, using data synced from Google every six hours, and the issue clears as soon as the problem is no longer found.

Because it compares two periods, it also clears once conversions settle at the new level, since the period before then looks the same. If the double count is still there, conversion figures stay inflated, so fix the cause rather than waiting.

An action that stays clear for 7 days drops off the plan. If you marked it done but the problem is still found 14 days later, it returns as “Fix didn’t work”. See Using the action plan.
